Yesterday my little brother called because a stranger, a worker at a bakery told him that he really reminded her of a friend and that he's nearly identical to this friend she has, and said my name. Turns out she's the lady from the secondhand book cart I used to live next to and befriended her while walking by nearly every day, but then I moved and she switched jobs and I haven't seen her in months and I've been wondering how she's doing every time I shopped at a book cart and apparently she remembers my name too and thinks of me as a dear friend. Idk it just made me happy and I feel like there's a poem to write here but I'm not very good with words
#I even came out to her as trans at some point and she called me by my chosen name today when talking to my brother#I used to buy my compulsory readings from her and after a while she'd put aside the Russian classics for me#and then sometimes I just went to hang out and she told me about her life and her son and jobs and all#and sometimes I'd stay until she closed up and we'd pack up the books together for the night#I used to visit her now and then even after I moved#after she switched jobs we still ran into each other at the metro station once but I haven't seen her since#when I had top surgery and couldn't visit for quite long#afterwards she said that she was wondering where I am and that she hoped nothing was wrong!!!#I'll visit her at the bakery when I can <3#I need y'all to know for context that this is in Budapest!!! it's a HUGE city#and my brother and I live in quite different parts of the city#and we're both originally from Transylvania and he only moved here recently#the coincidence is insane#anyway I love people and I love a community and I just love it here so much#I was having a kinda tiring and tough day and this cheered me up so much

Uh. most of it#I lived in Queens for five years as a kid and did four years in Manhattan (and a semester in Tokyo) for college#and spending three months in Novi Beograd recently just reminded me how much better my life is when I'm in a WALKABLE CITY#[frustration]#(also this doesn't count as NYC but does count as tempting mockery of it: I've spent a decade on LI which means two hours to nyc)#So I've basically been either in the city or in its suburban metro area for all except infancy (20 months)#and six years in Colorado for middle/high school#other than that. NYC and LI#and I *miss it*#*I need a good job*

anyways I think I'm warming to the idea of the Midwest in general
#colorado or new mexico is still very much plan a after this phd is done#but the front range metro areas are all very expensive and albuquerque is affordable but has limited job opportunities for me#and idk maybe the midwest wouldn't be so bad?#i don't vibe with the east coast and the political climate in the south is too generally fucked up#and granted ohio is also fucked up politically but it at least voted to protect abortion rights in the state constitution#but there's also michigan and illinois and minnesota

#for the blissfully uninitiated: hello i am history student#which is a fantastic thing to be but also a significant pain in the [REDACTED] when it wants to be#the professor for this class is almost unbearably terrible which does not exactly make me WANT to do this reading#but the exam is in like 2 weeks lol#so yk. i have the hardest life of anyone on earth etc etc#god forbid i actually do the degree i asked to do lmao#also i up early this morning to drag myself to the immigration bureau for a visa amendment#which meant a decidedly unpleasant hour on the metro during rush hour :(#its bc im applying for this english TA position in spring#its literally only for 5 days and tbh i wouldn't mind doing it for free bc i am sad like that and enjoy teaching for fun#but it IS paid - and paid work is Not Allowed under my student visa#so even though i literally have not even GOT the job (applications close today) i still had to go and apply for permission to work#watch as they dont hire me lol#oh i should mention - for those who may not know i am in tokyo this year#i am british and i usually go to uni in the uk but im on a study abroad year this year#i came to japan in sept of 2023 so ive been here for coming up on 5 months and i will be going back home in august on 2024#its weird to think that im approaching the halfway point#tbh i should really just make this a separate post but whatever#coming to japan has been very strange but a good thing i think

May have had to pass up an archaeology job because of this city's woefully inadequate public transportation. I hate it here.
#I daresay of every capital city in the EU our transport is the worst#No metro. 2 trams. one electric train line. 3 train lines total. and those trains do not run early enough to get me to my job.#we as a country have the shortest length of Electric train lines in the EU#the entire country has less electrified train lines than the state of indiana#you know how embarrassing it is to have worse trains that indiana?#its a state where it is explicitly illegal to build a light rail in its capital#they wrote a specific law for that#and somehow they still have more electrified trains than us
